The first woman architect in Georgia, Liela Ross Wilburn, originally designed the house as a duplex for a man with two daughters. Construction was finished in 1920. However, over the years the house became run down and neglected. By the time the new owners bought the property the house had become unlivable.
Greg Ramsey and Robert Preston of Village Habitat Design did the preliminary design work. The design was then turned over to Greg Mix to measure the house and create existing plans and elevations on CAD. Once this was done we began work on the design development drawings, bringing Greg Ramsey's design sketches into finished construction drawings on the computer. During this phase Mr. Mix worked with the owner to refine the design and make changes to the design at the request of the owners. Due to the site restrictions much coordination was required with the City of Atlanta.
The main entrance leads into the first floor living room of the first floor duplex unit. While the second floor unit was accessed from a single door on the left side of the front porch. In order to convert the structure into a single-family residence we replaced this entry door with a window and replaced the stairway with stair that is open to the living room. This did much to open up the first floor of the house and made the living room feel much larger.
During the measuring and documentation phase of the design project we discovered that all of the existing wood work, including the Corinthian columns, were made from old Florida cypress, a wood that is naturally very resistant to rot and decay. Still much work was required to strip away, sand down or repair eighty-five years of old paint, dirt and neglect. Due to the deteriorated condition of the brick and mortar the owner decided to seal and protect it with paint.
